A Pair of Export Pewter Soup Plates by Townsend & Compton - SOLD
Pair of English Export Pewter Soup Plates by Townsend & Compton of London, 1784-1806. This firm was a partnership between John Townsend and his son-in-law Thomas Compton. The Townsend dynasty which began in 1748 and continued into the first quarter of the 19th century. All the members enjoyed a generous business with the American Colonies and later the United States. Tens of thousands of pieces of their pewter made its way to our shores.
This pair of soup plates measure 8 1/8” in diameter. One plate has some pits on the back otherwise they are in fine condition with fine as struck touches. Both plates have beautiful hammered booges. They both show a slight amount of knife marks.
