A Set of Six Export Pewter Plates by Fasson and Son - SOLD
Fasson and Son were Exporters from London working from 1784-1813. They were the last of a lineage of pewterers beginning with Samuel Ellis (1721-1765) who was succeeded by Thomas Swanson, also of London (1753-1783). Swanson had a touch Successor to S. Ellis and his main touchmark was copied from Ellis’. Fasson and Son Succeeded Swanson and hence continued to use Ellis’ hallmarks.
This is an original set of six plates. It is very interesting that one plate shows it was used considerably and a second shows moderate wear the other four are nearly in new condition. This would infer that the owner of these plates was a single individual who occasionally had a guest. The late Charles V. Swain once had in his collection a set of six 6” “butter plates” by Thomas Danforth with the Rampant Lion in circle touch. “Bud” as he was known to most, stated these had been acquired from the proverbial “old lady” who used the top plate every day as her butter plate. That particular plate showed considerable wear while the rest were in new condition.
The plates are beautifully hammered and have very fine touchmarks. They measure 8 15/16” in diameter, Sets of this quality are difficult to come by.
