An 8" Export Pewter Plate by Townsend & Compton

8” Export pewter plate by Townsend & Compton of London. This was a partnership between John Townsend and his son-in-law Thomas Compton. The firm was in business from 1784-1806.

John Townsend had established his firm as a major exporter to the Colonies, this activity was carried on by this partnership as well as several others John Townsend was involved in. The Compton’s carried on this activity after John Townsend passed.

This plate is in near fine condition with very good as struck touches. There are a few minor pits on the face. The booge is nicely hammered and lathe marks still clearly show on the rim.
