An Export Pewter Dish by Townsend & Compton of London
An Export Pewter Dish or Platter by Townsend & Compton, London. 1784-1802. This Dish has a wider rim that is found on some of their flatware. This slightly wider rim is found on some 8 7/8” plates as well as Dishes of this size 13 3/8”.
Townsend & Compton was the partnership of John Townsend and his Son -in-Law, Thomas Compton. They had a major export market to the United States. With Townsend being a Quaker, he was able to establish a major market with the Quakers in Pennsylvania.
This dish is in near fine condition with a clearly hammer booge, and most lathe marks clearly seen both on the front and back of the rim. The touches are fine as struck.
