An English Export Pewter Plate by Robert & Thomas Porteous. In the Boston Public Library Nancy Goyne Evans found a letter from these pewterers to a merchant firm in Boston of Blanchard & Hancock dated 22nd February 1765. The order was for many thousands of articles of pewter.. Therein they express their thanks for the order as exports from England had declined due in part to the increased production by American Pewterers. The document has the device which on their die of an ostrich.
This plate measures 7 5/8” in diameter and is in very good plus condition with fine “as struck” touches.
This plate has a hammered booge that was a technique practiced by the vast majority of English pewterers. (ON HOLD)
