A Pewter Plate by Compton of London

This plate marked with a "Made in London" label and the oval Compton touch are likely the product of Thomas & Townsend Compton, London 1802-1814. This 7 3/4" diameter plate is typical of the many many, thousands of plates the Townsend firm and its successors sent to America.

In the photo of the touchmarks with arrows, note how the edge of the"Made in London" mark is rough. This particular die was crumbling and it eventually lost a good deal of the wording at this point. Due to this deterioration you can judge if a Compton plate with this Made in London die is of early or later production. The more damage the later it is.

The plate is in very good plus condition with excellent hammering on the booge. The touchmarks are in very fine condition with nearly full strikes of both
