A magnificent pair of double dropped belly cup chalices attributed with confidence to the shop of Robert Bush, Bristol, England 1755-likely until 1793 or later. For years many of us believed these chalices were of American origin as they were encountered in communion sets found in New England Churches. However enough of these were found in complete communion sets with flagons and paten plates marked by Bush that it became apparent the Bush Shop was the producer of these chalices. The communion sets with these chalices date from the 2nd half of the 18th century.
It is interesting to note that Bush employed a much higher quality of metal in his production of hollowware than he did in his sadware (flatware). These are of a generous heft and are a very pleasing design. The double stepped cup atop a very dramatic bold stem set on a double domed base likely also used perhaps as a tankard lid. These are in fine condition measuring 6 7/8” tall.
Note the open base: Not only does this make soldering the shaft to the base go more smoothly but it prevents liquid from remaining in the shaft when washing them.
Price: $425
