Pewter Plate by Joseph Danforth, Sr. - SOLD
Joseph Danforth Sr was the second son of Thomas Danforth II. After the latter’s death in 1782, Joseph took over the Middletown Shop. It is interesting to note the actual pewter shop was attached to Joseph’s house. The building still exists in Middletown, although it is no longer at its original location.
Joseph worked from 1779 until his death in 1788. His skill as a pewterer rivaled his father’s skill. His workmanship is very consistent. He produced, plates, dishes, basins, mugs and porringers. Had he lived longer the population of examples of his work would undoubtedly be greater.
This 7 7/8” pewter plate was made in the family mold, it is in near fine condition with as struck touches. There are also several names lightly scratched on the face of the rim and back of the plate. A nice example of an 18th century Middletown plate. (ON HOLD)
