A Near Mint Pewter Plate by Nathaniel Austin
Over the years when we acquire a pristine or near pristine example of an 18th century piece of pewter I always find it pleasing to think that something that is so old got tucked away in a safe spot and is preserved pristine for us to study and enjoy.
This 8” Nathaniel Austin plate is one such example. This plate bears about perfect impression of his scroll touch along with his hallmarks. Austin first primary touch was a lion in gateway touch. This was used circa 1763-1775. Austin discontinued to use this die after the British burned down his shop in Charlestown. He then moved to Lunenburg, Massachusetts where he conducted business a number of years. It is believed that this scroll die was used during this time dating this touchmark from 1775-1784-85. Austin returned to Charlestown around 1785. At that time a new die with a spread eagle was created. Therefore, this die was primarily used during the Revolutionary War Period.
This plate in nearly perfect in all respects. Lathe marks show clearly both on the front and back of the plate. Also notice the "chatter" on the outer bead of the rim, indicating the there was some vibration of his lathe.
It would be nearly impossible to find a more perfect example. (ON HOLD)
