A quart pewter mug by Boardman Warranted, marked with New Haven County stamp. This mug undoubtedly was used as a measure as it is “sealed” with the County Stamp.
According to a state of Connecticut act of 9 Oct-1 Nov 1800, "the treasurer of each county. . . shall have the custody and safe-keeping of the weights and measures belonging to the county, and it shall be his duty . . . to try all such weights and measures as shall . . . be presented to him to be tried by the county standard, and to seal such as are found true with the capital letter C, and that which begins the name of the county." Thanks to David K resident authority of measures of the PCCA.
The mug measures 5 7/8” tall to the lip and is in very good plus condition both inside and out.. The Boardman Warranted touch was used by Thomas D. Boardman in partnership with his brother Sherman Boardman. It is struck on the outside bottom in the 19th century fashion.
A most interesting mug that served as a New Haven County measure.
Price: $1150
